Collection: San Giovanni Wines

The San Giovanni label series was created to honor The Great Arrival of Italian born immigrants to the United States from the 1880’s to the 1920’s. Over four million souls braved the journey on ships like the San Giovanni in search of a better life for their families.

Our grandfather, Antonio Merlino, came to America on the San Giovanni from a small village near Foggia in southern Italy. He met our grandmother whose parents arrived a few years earlier from Sicily. These new Americans brought wonderful new foods and recipes and pizza has become America's favorite food!

The new arrivals also brought a love of wine, wine making and growing their own foods. Our grandfather’s small press and home wine making helped inspire his son in law (Valley View’s founding father, Frank) to become a pioneer in the Oregon wine industry.

The San Giovanni wine series is composed of Italian varieties grown in Southern Oregon. The first releases will be:

2016 San Giovanni Barbera

Grown by Celestina vineyards in the foothills of the sunny Bear Creek valley of Southern Oregon, this rich, dark red is loaded with flavors of black cherry, black raspberry and red currants with medium tannins, balanced acidity and body. The wine has been perfectly cellar aged and is drinking great right now. The aromas and flavors really develop after an hour or so of breathing. This wine is an excellent match with hard cheeses, all meats and tomato based pasta dishes. It should continue to develop well past 2024.

2016 San Giovanni Dolcetto

Grown by Celestina vineyards in the foothills of the sunny Bear Creek valley of Southern Oregon, this medium bodied Italian red features classic flavors of red plum jam, fresh blackberries and a touch of vanilla on a slightly crisp, well balanced long finish. Tannins are very well integrated due to the cellaring and this wine is ready to be enjoyed tonight. Due to the bright acidity, fruit flavors and medium structure this red will enhance virtually any dish (even fish or chicken) or even just sitting on the porch with just a glass.

2019 San Giovanni Sangiovese

Grown by Cliff Creek vineyards in the foothills of the Bear Creek valley this medium bodied Italian red is vibrant with earthy acidity, crisp flavors of red cherries, red plums and strawberries. It is still improving but the lively fresh flavors are so enjoyable right now, why wait? Enjoy with any foods you would with a Pinot noir or even a Chardonnay.

2019 San Giovanni Moscato Blanco

Estate grown by Valley View in the high mountains of the Applegate Valley this wine is 90% Muscat Blanc a Petits Grains blended with 10% Verdejo. This unique blend is absolutely delicious and fills the nose with Spring flowers and loads of tropical fruit aromas and flavors. The wine is dry but the flavors are so ripe it tastes slightly sweet with a crisp, balanced finish. This wine should still add complexity over the next few years (2022-2025.) Excellent with appetizers, cheeses and fish and chicken dishes, it is also a perfect hot tub wine!
